Car tax return

If you conduct business activities in Slovakia and use a vehicle to generate income, you are required to file a motor vehicle tax return — Daň z motorových vozidiel. This tax is regulated by the legislation of the Slovak Republic and administered by the tax authorities (Finančná správa).
Who is required to file the declaration?
- self-employed individuals (živnostník);
- legal entities (s.r.o., a.s., etc.);
- foreign entrepreneurs registered in Slovakia;
- persons using a vehicle to generate income.
It is important to understand that the tax obligation does not arise only when the vehicle is registered to a company. Even if the car is registered to a private individual but used for business purposes (for example, client visits, deliveries, logistics), the tax obligation still applies.
In which cases does the tax not apply?
The tax is not payable if:
- the vehicle is not used for business purposes;
- the vehicle has been completely withdrawn from business use;
- the business activity has been suspended and the vehicle was not used to generate income.
However, in each case it is important to properly document the period of use to avoid questions from the tax authorities.
Deadline for filing the declaration
The declaration must be submitted annually by January 31 of the year following the reporting year, exclusively in electronic form via the tax authority portal. If the vehicle was not used for the entire year (for example, it was purchased in June or sold in September), the tax is calculated proportionally to the number of months of use. It is also important to remember that if the obligation arises during the year (for example, you start using the vehicle for business purposes), this must be properly reflected in the report.
How is the tax amount calculated?
The tax amount depends on several factors:
- type of vehicle (passenger car, truck, trailer, etc.);
- engine capacity (for passenger cars);
- weight and number of axles (for trucks);
- age of the vehicle;
- environmental class;
- region of registration.
In Slovakia, reduced coefficients apply to new vehicles, and rates vary depending on the age of the car. Therefore, the final tax amount may differ significantly even for similar models.
Incorrect calculation may result in underpayment and fines, overpayment (which happens quite often), or the need to file an amended declaration.
What documents are required?
- vehicle registration certificate (Osvedčenie o evidencii);
- information about the period the vehicle was used for business;
- Tax ID number (DIČ) or company details;
- access to a qualified electronic signature or power of attorney for a representative;
- information about possible changes (sale of the vehicle, suspension of business activity, etc.).
If the vehicle was sold or deregistered, it is important to correctly indicate the last month of use.
Liability and penalties
Late submission of the declaration or failure to pay the tax may result in:
- late filing penalties;
- accrued interest charges;
- additional inspections by the tax authorities.
Even if the payable tax amount is minimal, filing the declaration remains mandatory. Ignoring this obligation may lead to more serious consequences.
Why do entrepreneurs often make mistakes?
In practice, the most common situations include:
- failing to file a declaration when the tax amount is zero;
- incorrect calculation of the number of months of use;
- not taking into account changes in tax rates;
- not knowing that the obligation arises even with partial use of the vehicle.
It is especially difficult for those who have recently registered a business in Slovakia or do not speak Slovak.
