Trains in Slovakia

18.01.2023
The main railway line runs through the entire Slovak Republic. It allows quick access to most major cities in the country and to other countries.

All trains are divided into several types:
  • Passenger train (Os). These trains usually travel short distances between nearby settlements.
  • Regional Express (REX). High-speed train. The route often coincides with passenger trains. Usually there are no first-class carriages on this express, but there are pleasant bonuses for some types of preferential fares.
  • Rapid and express trains (R, Ex). High-speed trains with frequent services over medium and long distances. Express trains consist of 1st and 2nd class carriages or mixed carriages, dining carriages, bicycle carriages or compartments, and sleeping carriages. Ex trains sometimes even have separate carriages for transporting cars.
  • Eurocity (EC, IC). They do not stop at all stations. They have carriages with increased comfort. There are carriages for families with children. They are used for travel both within Slovakia and to other EU countries. The EC category differs from the IC category by a stricter requirement to strictly follow international criteria. For example, the staff must speak several languages, and the average speed must be above 90 km/h.

Some trains in SR are already outdated, but the fleet is being gradually and systematically updated. More and more comfortable trains with air conditioning, Wi-Fi and an intelligent traffic information system are appearing.
