Calling an Ambulance in Slovakia

18.01.2026
If you are in Slovakia and face an emergency situation, it is important to know how to quickly call for medical assistance. The main ambulance number is 155. This is a direct number for calling emergency medical services throughout Slovakia. You can also call the pan-European emergency number 112, which is available even with foreign SIM cards and works in all EU countries.

To ensure that help arrives as quickly as possible, when speaking with the dispatcher you should:
  • state the address or exact location (city, street, house number, landmarks, GPS location);
  • briefly describe the situation and the patient’s symptoms (for example, loss of consciousness, pain, bleeding, etc.);
  • provide your name and a phone number where you can be reached if clarification is needed.
The main language of communication is Slovak. However, if you call 112, there is a chance to communicate in English. If you do not know the language, use simple English words and short phrases, do not panic, and speak slowly.

It is recommended to always carry your residence permit card (if you have one) and your health insurance card (Slovak health insurance card or the European EHIC).

If you do not have insurance, you may be billed for the medical services provided. If the medical incident occurred under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the insurance company has the right to recover all treatment costs from you, even if you have valid insurance.
