New type of car number plates in Slovakia

Since the beginning of 2023, a new procedure for registering and issuing car numbers has been in force in Slovakia. Changes to the Road Traffic Act were adopted by Parliament back in 2021. What has changed? When registering a vehicle, numbers will now be issued without reference to the region of SR. This makes life much easier for the car owner. For example:

• the process of deregistering and registering a car has been simplified; now this can be done at any road inspection office in Slovakia;
• When selling a vehicle, the owner has the option of keeping the registration number for himself or transferring it to the buyer;
• The transfer of ownership of a car to another person is simplified, since the two-stage notification procedure is changed, which saves time and money.

The police still have a stock of plates with old license plates. Until it runs out, both types of plates will be issued. This will take about 4 months. The new plates will look like AA-001AA.
