Health insurance payment in Slovakia

08.02.2025
The procedure for paying insurance contributions in Slovakia depends on your status: employee, entrepreneur, student, or unemployed:
  • For employees under an employment contract. The employer deducts contributions from the salary and transfers them to the employee's chosen insurance company.
  • For self-employed individuals. You are responsible for calculating and paying your insurance contributions. Payments must be made monthly by the 8th of the following month. The amount depends on the previous year's income (in 2025, the minimum rate is €107.25 per month).
  • For unemployed individuals and students. The state pays contributions for those officially registered as unemployed. Full-time students under the age of 26 are also insured at the state's expense.
  • For entrepreneurs without income and freelancers. Individuals registered as sole proprietors (FOP) in Slovakia are required to pay contributions even if they have no income.
  • For foreigners with a residence permit. It is mandatory to obtain health insurance. Payments can be made either as a lump sum for a year or on a monthly basis.
Payment methods: via online banking (using your insurance company’s IBAN), through a bank terminal or the insurance company’s mobile app, or directly at a bank branch or post office.
