Stefan Banic was a Slovak immigrant who witnessed a tragic coal mine accident in Pennsylvania, which prompted him to create the first prototype of a parachute, which was later registered with the US Patent Office.
Wolfgang von Kempelen was an inventor who worked for Maria Theresa and was known for his achievements in mechanics and optics. Although his automatic chess player was later revealed to be a hoax, he invented a speech machine and a special typewriter for the blind.
Josef Petzval was a mathematician who graduated from the University of Vienna and is considered the founder of modern photography. He developed optical lenses that played an important role in the creation of the modern camera, as well as improved the telescope and invented opera glasses.
Jan Bagil was a scientist known for his many inventions, including the first steam tank, reservoir pump, air bladder with air turbine, and the first gasoline engine in Slovakia. His most famous invention was a gasoline-powered helicopter, which he piloted himself.
