How to change your driving license to a Slovak one

04.05.2023
Citizens of other countries who plan to stay in Slovakia for a short time can use their foreign driving license. It will also be valid for 6 months from the date of receiving a temporary residence permit in Slovakia. Another 2 months are given for replacement. But after that, driving without a local license will be considered a violation of the law.

To replace foreign driving licenses of categories A and B with Slovak ones, you need to complete the following steps:
  1. Obtain a certificate of authenticity of a foreign driving license. You can get it at the Consulate of your country in SR or at the traffic police department of your country, with subsequent translation into Slovak and certification by a notary.
  2. Make a notarized copy of the driver's license in Slovak.
  3. Visit the police department at your place of registration in Slovakia. Bring a certificate of authenticity of your license, a certified and translated copy of your license, and your foreign driver's license. Pay the fee and submit your documents. No need for an appointment. Just show up and get a ticket from the local machine.
Usually the procedure for replacing a license takes about a month, but if you need to get a Slovak driver's license urgently, you can pay a fee for a quick replacement of the license. In this case, the new license will be ready within two days.
