What to Do If You Lose Your Residence Permit Card in Slovakia

03.05.2026
Losing your residence permit card is unpleasant, but it is a completely manageable situation. The key is to act quickly and follow the established procedure to avoid fines and document-related issues.
  1. Report the loss to the police. You need to contact a regular police station (not the immigration police) in the area where the loss occurred or where you live in Slovakia. There, you must file a report regarding the loss or theft of your residence permit card. After your report is processed, you will receive an official document confirming the loss or theft. If you have a copy or photo of the lost card, its details will be entered into the database of invalid documents to prevent possible misuse.
  2. Book an appointment with the immigration police. Next, you must schedule a visit to the immigration police department through the official website. Choose the section related to “other life situations” and make sure to book an appointment at the office corresponding to your place of residence.
  3. Prepare the documents and attend your appointment. At the scheduled time, you need to visit the immigration police with the following documents:
    • a completed application form for the issuance of a new residence permit card;
    • the original police report confirming the loss or theft;
    • a valid international passport;
    • proof of residence (if your address has changed).
At the office, you will need to pay the state fee for issuing a new card — usually €10 or €39 (depending on the processing time). In most cases, there is also a fine for losing the document, which may amount to €165. Standard processing for a new card usually takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks. In urgent cases, the document may be issued within 2 working days. As a rule, the new residence permit card is issued for the same validity period as the lost one, without extension.
