Water in Slovakia

22.06.2024
Water is one of Slovakia's greatest assets: there are numerous rivers, lakes, reservoirs and thermal springs. The country is one of Europe's leading countries in terms of underground water reserves. There are about 150 million cubic meters of water under the earth's surface.

There are more than one and a half thousand mineral water sources in the Slovak Republic, and many new sources of healing water have been discovered in recent years. The potential of geothermal waters with a temperature of 75 - 95 degrees Celsius is enormous, and they are beginning to be used for heating homes, for industrial and agricultural purposes.

Hydrologists and doctors claim that drinking water in Slovakia is of very high quality, with 85% of the population getting it from public sources. Water use and protection are at a fairly high level in SR. You can drink tap water even without boiling. It is really tasty and clean. It does not smell of chlorine, and there is no rust in it.

In recent years, water consumption in the country has decreased. If 15 years ago it was 137 liters per person per day, now it is only about 107 liters (in the EU it is about 170 liters). The main reason is the significant increase in water prices and the gradual change in the social and living habits of Slovaks.
