Health Insurance for Students in Slovakia

20.07.2025
If a student with a residence permit (residence for study purposes) in Slovakia meets certain conditions, they may be exempt from paying for health insurance themselves — the state can cover the cost. This is possible if the following requirements are fulfilled:
  • the student holds a temporary residence permit for study and is enrolled in full-time education;
  • they are under the age of 26;
  • they reside in Slovakia with a parent who already has health insurance in the country;
  • the student is financially dependent on that parent.
To apply for state-covered health insurance, the parent must submit the following documents to their health insurance provider:
  1. A certificate confirming the student’s full-time enrollment.
  2. The student’s birth certificate.
  3. Proof that the parent is insured with the specific health insurance company in Slovakia.
Once the documents are reviewed and eligibility is confirmed, the student will be included in the public health insurance system. The coverage remains valid until the student completes their studies or reaches the age of 26.

If the student is in Slovakia without their parents or is over 26, they cannot be included in the public system. In that case, they must obtain private health insurance.

Students who are economically inactive are not entitled to public health insurance — regardless of whether they are in the country alone or with parents — but they still have access to healthcare covered by the state.
