Changing an Employer with a Work Residence Permit in Slovakia

04.07.2026
If you hold a Slovak residence permit for employment purposes, you may change your employer provided that certain conditions are met. If you have a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment, you are only allowed to work for the employer and in the position that were approved by the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family. Exception: If you graduated from a Slovak university or secondary school, you do not need to obtain permission to change employers—you are free to take up employment with a new employer.

What to do when changing your employer:
  1. The new employer must report the vacancy to the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family at least 20 working days before you submit your employment application.
  2. After that, you must submit an application to the Office of Labour requesting approval for your employment in the new position.
  3. The Office of Labour reviews the application within 15 working days. If approved, it sends the confirmation to the Foreign Police and to the employer.
  4. Only after receiving this confirmation are you legally allowed to start working for the new employer.
Graduates of Slovak educational institutions may start working immediately without obtaining any additional permits. The only requirement is to submit the following documents to the Foreign Police within a few days: a notification of the start of employment; a copy of the diploma or certificate confirming graduation from a Slovak university or secondary school.
