What souvenirs cannot be imported into Slovakia

26.09.2024
In Slovakia, as in other EU countries, it is not possible to import certain types of souvenirs because they may be made from protected species of animals and plants.

Categories of prohibited goods:
  • Products made from coral, sea shells and turtle shells. They are often made from endangered species.
  • Ivory, including tusks. Importing these items may result in serious legal consequences.
  • Products made from crocodile and snake skin. Many species of these animals are protected.
  • Stuffed animals and animal skins. Import of both exotic and some local species is prohibited.
  • Plants and their parts. It is forbidden to import some types of plants, especially rare and protected ones.
Violation of import regulations may result in a fine of up to 100,000 euros and possibly imprisonment for up to 7 years.

To avoid such problems, you should always check what souvenirs are made of, if necessary, ask for certificates from sellers, and also familiarize yourself with local and international laws regarding protected species.
