Who Is Considered a Family Member of an EU Citizen

The legislation of the European defines who may be recognized as a family member of an EU citizen and exercise the corresponding rights to residence, family reunification, and social guarantees.Family members of an EU citizen include:
- spouse;
- children under 21 years of age, including minor and dependent children, as well as the children of the spouse;
- dependent direct relatives in the ascending or descending line (for example, parents or children), as well as such relatives of the spouse;
- dependent persons who do not fall into the categories listed above, if they are supported by the EU citizen in their country of origin;
- other family members who live together with the EU citizen as part of the same household;
- relatives who require personal care for serious medical reasons;
- the partner of an EU citizen with whom the citizen has a durable and officially documented relationship.
