Documents for obtaining a residence permit based on employment in Slovakia

Obtaining a residence permit for employment purposes is one of the most popular ways to legalize one’s stay in Slovakia. However, the procedure requires thorough preparation of the documents and compliance with all formal requirements.

To submit an application to the Foreigners’ Police, you will need:

1. International passport. A valid document whose validity period covers the intended period of residence.
2. Proof of the purpose of stay. This may be an employment contract, confirmation from the employer of employment, or confirmation from the Labour Office.
3. Criminal record certificate. This must be provided from your country of citizenship and from all countries where you have stayed for more than 90 days during the last 3 years.
4. Proof of accommodation. The document must cover a period of at least 6 months. An accommodation lease agreement, proof of ownership, or a čestné vyhlásenie (sworn declaration) from the property owner will be accepted.
5. Application form. It must be completed in Slovak in block letters using the prescribed form.
6. Administrative fees. €250 for processing the application, plus €10 or €39 for issuing the residence card (standard / expedited).

All documents must be no more than 90 days old at the time of submission. They must be in Slovak or translated by a sworn translator. Documents issued in other countries must be apostilled.

The key requirement is that the vacancy must be officially approved for the employment of a foreign national. The employer is required to obtain confirmation from the Labour Office. This document must be issued before the application is submitted and must not be more than 180 days old. Even if you are already working for this employer, this requirement remains mandatory. Graduates of a Slovak university or secondary school do not need confirmation from the Labour Office. Instead, they must provide a copy of their diploma and a letter from their employer.

Documents can only be submitted by prior appointment through the Foreigners’ Police website. An appointment can be made at any branch, regardless of the region.
