Pets in Slovakia

28.10.2022
The most popular pets here are dogs. According to a survey, 39% of the population of Slovakia have at least one dog at home, while, for example, only 20% of the country's residents keep cats. On the streets, you can often see specially trained assistance dogs to help people with disabilities.

It is important to know that each dog must be registered. There are tax payments for having an animal. The amount varies depending on the place of residence. Tax holidays are provided for those who take a dog from a shelter. There are quite a lot of places for walking. There are urns everywhere. The owner is obliged to clean up traces of walking himself.

The number of people walking dogs gives the impression that every family has at least one dog. But they are always well-behaved and do not show aggression towards others. Many cafes have bowls of water for pets. There are practically no stray dogs in Slovakia. This applies to both urban and rural areas.

If you want to come to this country with your pet, at the moment the State Veterinary and Food Administration of the SR has allowed non-commercial movement of pets into the territory of the state without any documents. After you have entered the country and met certain health criteria (vaccination), it is considered that the pet is here legally.
