Student budget in Slovakia in 2026

04.10.2026
The cost of living for a student in Slovakia depends on the city, accommodation, and lifestyle. Bratislava is generally more expensive than other cities in the country, especially if you rent a room or apartment instead of living in a student dormitory.

In Bratislava, an approximate monthly budget may look like this:
  • student dormitory: approximately €65–180;
  • room in a shared apartment: around €250–450;
  • food: €150–250;
  • public transport: €15–30;
  • mobile phone service: €10–25;
  • personal expenses and entertainment: from €50.
According to the estimate of the University of Economics in Bratislava, a student's basic expenses for accommodation, food, transport, mobile service, and health insurance amount to approximately €260–718 per month. The exact amount depends on the living arrangements and personal expenses.

Therefore, a student who lives in a dormitory and keeps expenses under control should budget approximately €500–700 per month. If you rent a room or have a more expensive lifestyle, the budget can be significantly higher.

How can you reduce your expenses?
  • Choose a student dormitory. This is usually considerably cheaper than renting private accommodation. However, a place in a dormitory is not provided automatically: allocation depends on the university and the availability of places.
  • Cook for yourself. Student canteens can also help reduce food expenses. For example, at the EUBA canteen, a meal at the student price costs approximately €2.80–4.50.
  • Use student fares. In Bratislava, students are entitled to discounted public transport fares if they meet the applicable conditions; the discount is available, among others, to full-time students under 26.
  • Buy second-hand books or use the library. Not all study materials need to be purchased individually.
  • Take advantage of student discounts. An ISIC card and student status can help you save on transport, cultural activities, sports, and certain services.
It is best to calculate your budget individually: a student who lives in a dormitory and cooks at home will spend considerably less than someone who rents accommodation and regularly visits cafés and entertainment venues.
