Differences between temporary residence permit and permanent residence permit in Slovakia

07.12.2023
A temporary residence permit is a temporary residence permit issued to a foreigner for a certain period. A permanent residence permit is a permanent residence permit. It can only be obtained after a temporary residence permit, if you live in Slovakia for more than five years. Both a temporary residence permit and a permanent residence permit allow foreigners to stay in the territory of the Slovak Republic, but those who plan to move here cannot immediately apply for a permanent residence permit; they must first obtain a temporary residence permit. Both types of residence permits give the right to freely leave and enter the country, travel within the EU, open and run a business in the SR, purchase real estate, work, study, obtain a Slovak driver's license, receive a number of social benefits, etc.

With permanent residence, you have more rights. For example, you don't need a work permit. Only permanent residence permit holders have the right to a one-time payment at the birth of a child. But the tax bonus, child benefit, maternity benefit, and parental benefit are available to people with any type of residence. With permanent residence, the rights and obligations become almost the same as those of citizens of the Slovak Republic. This status differs from citizenship in that it does not give the right to work in the civil service or participate in elections. But even with a temporary residence permit, you don't have the feeling that you are in a foreign country and that many benefits are unavailable to you.
