Cash Payment Limits in Slovakia

30.12.2025
Starting January 1, 2026, restrictions on cash payments in Slovakia will be reinstated and tightened as part of efforts to combat the shadow economy and tax evasion. The maximum amount for cash transactions between entrepreneurs, as well as between an entrepreneur and a consumer, will be limited to €5,000. For transactions between private individuals, the limit will remain €15,000.

Previously, due to the state of emergency, these limits were effectively suspended. However, from the beginning of the new year they will fully come back into force, with exceptions allowed only in genuinely urgent situations. These measures are being reintroduced to increase financial transparency, make it easier for tax authorities to monitor money flows, and reduce “grey” or fictitious cash transactions.

Violations of the established limits may result in fines and administrative penalties. In addition, starting March 1, 2026, sellers will be required to offer cashless payment options for purchases starting from €1.
