Notice Period for Termination of Employment in Slovakia
09.08.2026
In Slovakia, the notice period does not begin on the day you submit your resignation. The calculation always starts on the first day of the following calendar month after the employer has received the notice of termination of the employment contract. This rule applies regardless of whether you submit the notice at the beginning, in the middle, or at the very end of the month.The Slovak Labour Code establishes a uniform mechanism for calculating the notice period in order to avoid confusion regarding dates and ensure predictability for both parties.
This means that:
- the employer knows in advance when the employee will officially finish working;
- the employee can plan a transition to another job, relocation, or other important changes;
- situations where the notice period unexpectedly becomes “shorter” or “longer” depending on the date of submission are avoided.
- the length of the employment relationship;
- the reason for termination;
- who initiates the termination (the employer or the employee).
- 1 month — if the employee has been working for less than 1 year;
- 2 months — if the employee has been employed for more than 1 year;
- 3 months — if the employer initiates the termination for certain reasons (for example, organizational changes).
