Do you need to inform your employer about your pregnancy in Slovakia

18.10.2026
In Slovakia, pregnant women are protected by legislation that prohibits discrimination in the workplace. Women are not required to inform their employer about their pregnancy when applying for a job or during their employment.

Key aspects of the rights of pregnant women in Slovakia:

  • No obligation to disclose pregnancy. An expectant mother has the right not to disclose her pregnancy during a job interview or after being hired. This fact cannot be used as grounds for dismissal or the imposition of sanctions.

  • Probationary period. Employers are prohibited from establishing a probationary period for pregnant women. If a woman is already serving a probationary period and her employer learns of her pregnancy, the probationary period must be cancelled, even if it is specified in the employment contract.

  • Prohibition of discrimination in recruitment. Refusing to hire a woman because of her pregnancy is illegal and violates the law. An employer may refuse to hire a candidate only on the grounds of professional unsuitability (for example, a lack of the required qualifications). Refusal based on sex, age, having children or pregnancy may result in fines and other legal consequences for the company.

  • Fixed-term employment contracts. If a pregnant woman has entered into a fixed-term employment contract, it ends when the contract expires. The employer is not obliged to extend the contract because of her pregnancy, unless this is provided for by the company's internal policies or contractual obligations.
