Probation period in Slovakia

21.02.2025
The probation period in Slovakia is regulated by the provisions of the Labour Code and is intended to allow the employer to assess whether the employee meets the requirements of the position. The employment contract must specify the probation period, which can last a maximum of 3 months for regular employees and up to 6 months for managers.

If an employee is temporarily absent due to illness or other reasons, the probation period is extended by the corresponding number of days. In cases where the probation period is not specified in the contract, the employee is considered to be hired on a permanent basis without a probation period.

During the probation period, the employer has the right to dismiss an employee if their work does not meet expectations, providing a notice of termination 3 days before the contract ends. The employee also has the right to resign at any time by giving 3 days' notice.

According to Slovak legislation, the probation period cannot be applied to pregnant women, mothers with children under 3 years old, or employees being transferred within the company to another position. An official employment contract is mandatory from the first day of work, and no employer is allowed to offer a "trial period" without a formal agreement.
