Severance Pay in Slovakia

07.02.2026
The amount of severance pay in Slovakia is primarily determined by the length of employment with the employer and the reason for termination of the employment contract. The main rules are set out in § 76 of the Slovak Labour Code.

If the reason for dismissal is organizational changes (for example, job redundancy), the amount of severance depends on whether the termination is initiated by the employer or agreed upon mutually by both parties.

If the employment is terminated at the employer’s initiative:
  • with 2 to 5 years of service — one average monthly salary is paid;
  • with 5 to 10 years of service — two average monthly salaries;
  • with 10 to 20 years of service — three average monthly salaries;
  • with more than 20 years of service — four average monthly salaries.
If the employment relationship is terminated by mutual agreement:
  • with at least 2 years of service — one average monthly salary;
  • with 2 to 5 years of service — two average monthly salaries;
  • with 5 to 10 years of service — three average monthly salaries;
  • with 10 to 20 years of service — four average monthly salaries;
  • with more than 20 years of service — five average monthly salaries.
Therefore, to determine the severance pay you are entitled to, it is necessary to consider not only the number of years worked for the employer but also the method of termination — whether initiated by the employer or agreed upon mutually.
