Vacation in Slovakia

09.08.2025
According to the Slovak Labour Code, all employees are entitled to at least 4 weeks of paid vacation per year (5 weeks for those aged 33 and above). The right to the full annual leave is granted after one year of employment; before that, an employee may take leave proportionate to the time worked. Minors, pregnant women, and parents of young children are entitled to special conditions.

Vacation can be split into parts, but one of them must last at least 2 consecutive weeks unless otherwise agreed by the employee and employer. Vacation pay is provided before the start of the leave. Unused days can be carried over to the following year, but they must be used before its end, otherwise they expire. Compensation for unused days is possible if the employee is unable to take them due to termination of employment.

If vacation dates overlap for several employees, priority is given to those with special social or family circumstances. In summer, employees with special needs are granted leave first.

An employee may postpone or extend their leave if they fall ill during it. Additional days are granted in connection with the birth of a child, the loss of a loved one, or other important life events.
