Food in Slovakia

07.11.2022
Slovak cuisine varies from region to region and is closely related to neighboring countries. Most of the delicious dishes contain dairy products and potatoes. Popular are sheep's milk cheeses, bryndza and cottage cheese. The most typical Slovak dish is dumplings with bryndza and lard.

Most Slovaks have an early breakfast. They usually eat sandwiches, porridge or scrambled eggs. Lunches and dinners in this country often begin with soups. The most famous of them are kapustnitsa and garlic soup. Kapustnitsa includes sauerkraut, onions, dried mushrooms and sausages. Garlic soup has a creamy consistency and melts in your mouth. Slovak goulash is a stew of meat with potatoes, to which tomato paste, paprika and garlic are added. The most popular meats are beef, chicken and pork. Sometimes deer or rabbit meat is eaten.

Residents of SR also love sweets. Trdelnik is a pastry made from yeast dough, wound on a spit in a spiral. The walls inside are covered with chocolate, and the outside of the delicacy is coated with sugar and cinnamon. Bread pudding "zhemlovka" is baked with fruit and soaked in sweet milk.

Among drinks, wine from the south and local beer are in demand. Popular wines are: "slivovitz" and "borovicka". Among non-alcoholic drinks, residents prefer coffee, herbal tea, mineral water and "kofola" - Slovak cola.

During the New Year holidays, people here like to eat honey gingerbread, potato salad with eggs, peas and pickles, poppy seed dumplings, various rolls and strudels. Veterniks – pastries with custard and caramel or glaze – are also a must on the festive table. According to tradition, all family members must eat a clove of garlic to avoid getting sick during the coming year.
